What is Classical Summer? The Classical Summer Program is a 23-day study abroad program concentrating on art history, archaeology, and Italian language. It is unique because it combines the authenticity of a home-stay experience with the variety of an expansive tour. The trip departs from and returns to Dulles Airport, and it is open to all high school students. Please scroll throughout this page to learn more about the experience.

Morning Classes:
Afternoon Excursions:
Spend two days in Florence with access to The Uffizi, Duomo, Academia, to name just a few. _______ Enjoy several free afternoons for swimming at the pool in Cortona or for an organized outing with the group. |
Your Italian host is an upper level English student at her/his school. He/she will visit Washington for a week in October 2023. During your stay in Cortona, your host will walk you to the school each morning for your lessons and pick you up afterward to take you home for lunch. Some afternoons are free to hang out with friends and other afternoons we will meet back up in the piazza or elsewhere for a museum visit or outing.
Spend three nights on the Bay of Naples
-umbrella pines typical of the region-
The Villa Vergiliana on the Bay of Naples
A study center for Vergil overlooking the Bay of Naples, the Villa Vergiliana is the perfect home base for our Neapolitan excursions.
The villa has its own library/conference room and Roman amphitheater/archaeological dig on its grounds.
The villa is run by Mina and her father, who prepares Neapolitan home-cooked meals straight from the farm.
|
Students can explore the small farm on the villa property, play with the chickens, and pick fruit right from the tree!
|
Villa of the Mysteries, Pompeii
Tour Pompeii and the Archaeological Museum of Naples (where most Pompeiian treasures are stored).
Recently re-opened, the Villa of the Mysteries remains at risk of collapse due to the rumble of nearby trains and seismic activity in the region.
Bay Excursions
With four days to explore the bay, students get to see a lot of ancient Rome, on occasion having time for a beach day or a climb up Mount Vesuvius.
Puglia
Named "Best of the World" to visit by National Geographic, Puglia is our home for one week.
Mornings spent at a pre-Roman archaeological site.
Work side-by-side with Italian university students and learn all aspects of archaeology from the director of the dig. Finds are mostly from the 2nd c. BCE.
Afternoons spent either relaxing in town or excursions to the sea.
Final three days in Rome
Stay in the historic district close to the Pantheon with all the sights at your doorstep.
- Excellent flights between Rome and Dulles.
