Classical Summer June 2022
Tentative Itinerary  
 
Fri., June 10 – Overnight flight to Rome
Meet at Dulles Airport at 2pm.  Departure is 5:20pm.
 
Sat., June 11 – Overnight in Cortona 1 (8:10am arrival in Rome)
Meet with families at train station in Cortona. Evening dinner and Gelateria -whole group
 
Sun., June 12 – Overnight in Cortona 2
A day with families or an outing as a whole group, pool party, or other organized event

Mon., June 13 - Overnight in Cortona 3
Classes 1: Italian, Art History, and Etruscan History. 
Meet at 9am at the school. Afternoon- Cortona Etruscan Museum plus city tour and walk up to the fortress. Evening meet-up in piazza for a passeggiata.
 
Tues., June 14 – Overnight in Cortona 4
Classes 2: Italian, Art History, and Etruscan/Roman Early History.
Meet at 9am at the school.  Afternoon- Diocesan Museum plus a soccer "friendly" match with the Italians.
 
Wed., June 15 – Overnight in Cortona 5
Meet at 9am at Cortona train station.  Florence all day (Orsanmichele, Museo dell’Opera, Accademia, Chiesa di Santa Trinita- the church Mrs. Maclean was married in!)
 
Thur., June 16 – Overnight in Cortona 6
Classes 3: Italian, Art History, and Roman Republican + Imperial History. 
Meet at 9am at the school.  Afternoon Lake Trasimene for swimming (with whole group) and a little Roman history! Dinner with whole group at pizzeria in the main piazza.
 
Fri., June 17 – Overnight in Cortona 7
Meet at 9am at Cortona train station.  Florence all day (Uffizi, Duomo, Santa Croce). Evening farewell party.
  
Sat., June 18 - Overnight at the Villa Vergiliana 1
Meet at 8am at Cortona train station.  Travel to Naples.  Private Bus pick-up at train station.
Travel to Cumae.  Visit the Sybil's Cave and climb to the Temple of Apollo overlooking the Bay of Naples.  Dinner at the villa.
Evening Classes 4: Italian, Art History, and Mythology (in library at villa)
 
Sun., June 19 – Overnight at the Villa Vergiliana 2
Pompeii.  Naples Archaeological Museum.  Dinner at villa.
Evening Classes 5: Italian, Art History, Renaissance Italy (in library at villa)
 
Mon., June 20 – Overnight at the Villa Vergiliana 3
Paestum. Pit stop at the beach on the way home.  Dinner at villa.
Evening Classes 6: Italian, Art History, Unification and Modern Italy (in library at villa)

Tues., June 21 – Overnight in Lecce 1
Hike up Mount Vesuvius.  Travel to Lecce.
Evening tour of Lecce with Francesco and Antonio, our resident archaeologists. Gelato in the piazza and passeggiata.
 
Wed., June 22 – Overnight in Lecce 2
Classes 7: Italian, Intro to the Messapians
Dig alongside Italian archaeology students and teachers.  Afternoon visit to university museum.
Dinner together in a neighborhood pizzeria. Evening passeggiata / free time.
 
Thur., June 23 – Overnight in Lecce 3
Classes 8: Italian, Archaeology
Dig alongside Italian archaeology students and teachers.  Free Afternoon / Beach.
Dinner at the house – Antonio teaches us how to make aglio/olio.
 
Fri., June 24 – Overnight in Lecce 4
Classes 9: Italian, Archaeology
Dig alongside Italian archaeology students and teachers.  Free Afternoon / Beach.
Dinner at Francesco and Catia’s house.
 
Sat., June 25 – Overnight in Lecce 5
Day at Otranto and kayaking the Adriatic coast.  Evening Concerto.
 
Sun., June 26 – Overnight in Lecce 6
Day at Porto Cesareo and the beach.
 
Mon., June 27 – Overnight in Lecce 7
Classes 10: Italian, Archaeology
Dig alongside Italian archaeology students and teachers.  Free afternoon / Beach.
 
Tues., June 28 – Overnight in Rome 1
Travel to Rome. Colosseum, Forum Romanum, evening walking tour.  Dinner in Trastevere.  Hotel Curfew: 11pm. 
Evening Classes 11: Italian, The Treasures of Rome I (in conference room at hotel)
 
Wed., June 29 – Overnight in Rome 2
shopping, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps. 1 pm Vatican museums. 
Pantheon. Dinner at Piazza Navona - students on their own practicing their menu/ordering skills.
Evening Classes 12: Italian, The Treasures of Rome II (in conference room at hotel)

Thur., June 30 - Overnight in Rome 3
Capitoline Museums, Villa Borghese Gallery, picnic in the villa gardens.
Evening shopping and dinner together at Mrs. Maclean's favorite restaurant.
Evening Classes 13: trip debrief (in conference room at hotel)

Fri., July 1 – Return Flight to Washington
Departure from Rome Airport is 11:00am.  Arrival Washington Dulles 2:55pm.
