I took the new arrival under my own roof, I gave him a hero's welcome, treated him in style. And I gave my friend some gifts to fit his station. " - Homer, The Odyssey, book 24

2022 Schedule: (Some details may change.)
Mon, Oct. 3 - Italians arrive at Dulles at 3:05pm (direct from Rome) for a 4 or 4:30pm pick-up at which time they go to host families' homes for dinner, a shower, and bed. They are pretty tired and need an early bedtime! (Carpooling and/or a bus can be arranged, if needed.)
Tues, Oct. 4 - Italians arrive at Highland, along with their American host, in the morning and board a bus for Washington, DC with their teachers/chaperones. Italian students and teachers tour the Italian Embassy, and are treated to a welcome speech by and conversation with the attache. After the embassy visit, they have a quick lunch in DC and then are bussed back to school by 2:30pm to join their American hosts at school, spectate sports practices, or whatever you have planned. American hosts will still be expected to get their schoolwork done or whatever after-school commitments they have.
Wed. Oct. 5 and Thur., Oct. 6 - The Italians attend classes at school and the normal activities of their hosts. They do not expect to do more than just shadow their host to his/her regular after-school activities. Whatever their American host does for dinner, they do. The point is for them to see how an American student lives, so no special treatment needed. On Thur., Oct. 6 from 10:15am to 10:45am a group of Italian students will give a presentation on life/school in Cortona at Highland's Rice Theater - all were welcome to attend! (See their power point from last year below!)
Fri., Oct. 7 ("Pro Day" at Highland / no school) - Italians spend the day with their American host and get to sleep in, do laundry, and take a breath. A group event, like Haunted Hollow, will usually be organized by the American students that evening.
Sat., Oct. 8 and Sun., Oct. 9 - The Italians spend time with families, doing regularly scheduled activities. If your family goes to the lake, sports games, church, birthday party - wherever you go that weekend, your Italian will go with you! Many times groups of American friends plan activities together, like a trip to Tysons Corner or the steeplechase races, but there are no formal plans through the program for this weekend so it is considered free time to do what YOU want to do with your guest.
Mon., Oct. 10 - Columbus /Indigenous Peoples Day. There will be an afternoon potluck at a private home for all Italians, teachers, and host families. If interested in hosting the potluck, please let Ann know.
Tues., Oct. 11 - Our Italian friends leave from Haymarket, VA in the morning (very early - before school!) on a bus to NYC, where they will finish their journey in America.
